Greek Music Torrents

That was only the start, it appears, as Greek music rights organization Grammo has now joined in as well. The group filed a blocking application with the Hellenic Copyright Organization (OPI), a special commission that falls under the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.

According to the Government-affiliated commission, the music group has made it clear that the targeted sites are involved in copyright infringement. This means that ISPs will soon be asked to expand their blocklists with the new domain names.

This library features a Crotalum, Kymbalon, Sistrum, 15-inch Tympanon, 22-inch Tympanon, and Tympanon Zill. Crafted of wood, gut, goat skins and bronze, these rustic musical artifacts capture the sound and soul of classical Greek musical craftsmanship at its peak. Their influence has shaped modern frame drums, riqs, dafs, tambourines and finger cymbals. Each piece was hand-crafted by master instrument maker and musical historian Panagiotis Stefos of Lyrvlos in Athens. Stefos and his team played each instrument, all recorded in exquisite detail by producer John Valasis, with up to 12 round-robins and 10 dynamic velocities per articulation.

The Quintanilla family also still has 40 of Selena's recorded songs, but are not sure if they will continue to release her music. However, it is likely that a concert will be held in 2023 to celebrate the singer's legacy.

Selena Quintanilla is still present in the memory of millions of fans who, thanks to her music, videos and performances, remember her with great affection. She managed to establish herself as a great icon of Latin music.

One morning not so longago, I was working on an article and had just typed thephrase ‘The Barbarians at the gate’. I wantedto find an apt quotation which would illustrate themeaning of the word ‘barbarian’. I have twobooks of quotations, The Oxford Dictionary ofQuotations (ODOQ) and The Everyman’sDictionary of Quotations and Proverbs. Both had justone entry for the word ‘barbarian’. Theywere different quotations, as it happened, but neither ofany help to me in explaining the meaning of the word inthe sense I had used it, and which had been so neatlydefined by the Sanskrit proverb, Sahitya, Sangeetakala Viheena: Someone with no literature, no music,no art.

The hymns were compiledin the form of verses which could be chanted, and overthe years settled into a ritualistic form of recitingthem, in a sing-song voice and with appropriate movementsof the right hand and of the head. Even to this day,Sanskrit scholars can demonstrate the correct way ofchanting them: their heads bob up and down to keep timewith the music and their right hand draws figures in theair — movements which had been obviously devised inancient times to serve as memory-aids.

The guest artist in this instance was one of Australia's leading electronic musicians, Pimmon (AKA Paul Gough, host of Quiet Space on ABC Radio National). His work is deeply considered, balancing edgy detail with lush resonance. As such, it has found a predictably strong international following. His basic approach is to find simple loops from obscure sources - old pop songs, for instance, on out-of-print LPs - and to bury them beneath torrents of thick feedback and noise. The result is haunting, romantic and, to me, completely engaging. This is complemented by his driven and, at times, mildly demonic stage presence, a rare visage for a laptop artist.

Whilst hearing a rare live performance of one of Stockhausen's more influential works was undeniably exciting, I must admit that the idea of it appealed more to me than the actual experience. For me, this was music of its time, somewhat overshadowed by later, more visceral approaches to electroacoustics by other composers. I often feel that, in Stockhausen's early music, the power of the central idea is diluted by excessively fine detail and an over-reliance on Darmstadt rhetoric. Having said that, the performance by Bernadette Balkus, Claire Edwardes and Bob Scott was impassioned, engaged and highly memorable. They are to be lauded for revitalising this music for a newer generation, the group's sell-out concert at the Sydney Opera House the night before being evidence of a hunger for such bold and meaty programming. 2ff7e9595c
