This page lists the progress of ScummVM as it relates to individual game compatibility. Please note this list applies to the English versions of games. We attempt to test many versions of games, however there are occasionally problems with other languages.

Note: ScummVM does not include any games. To play one of the game listed on this page you will need to have your own copy of the game and add it to ScummVM. Some games are available for free on our Game downloads page. For other games see the Where to get the games page on our wiki. For information on how to add games to ScummVM see the documentation.

Old versions of Minecraft: Java Edition are available on Mojang's website, although note that such versions may contain critical security vulnerabilities. Direct download links can be found on MCVersions for convenience.

Randomizers are game modifications and utilities that randomly arranges original game data in a way that significantly increase their replayability. Their randomization are applied before or when starting a new game in order to effectively generate many different games to experience based off the originals. They are also designed to prevent new unwinnable states to the game, or at the very least make such issues extremely unlikely or have easily-applicable non-destructive workarounds.

Randomizers may feature major gameplay tweaks to accomodate possible randomized changes, or other additional minor improvements. However, a game modification or utility that may change any other gameplay element and which cannot be disabled would not be considered a randomizer, as the modified game would become closer to a custom game instead of a randomized one.

This list shows all freely-available video game randomizers known to me that are playable by the general public and not bundled with the game they randomize, regardless of their fun factor. They are listed by the games they randomize and grouped by game series, along with the randomizer's name (or the primary creators' names if it is too generic) in parentheses, along with any additional documentation whenever necessary. I update the list frequently and try to keep it up-to-date to the best of my abilities.

If you ever notice a video game randomizer valid for inclusion that is not already listed, please contact me so I can add it! Special thanks to the numerous contributors so far that have made this list what it is today!

For those interested in creating randomizers, you can listen to the Making a Randomizer panel from Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 explaining the process in detail. ROMHacking.net is also a great resource with plenty of technical information and tools for hacking video games in general. Frameworks such as randomtools-js and Simple Randomizer Maker may also help for development purposes.

For those that perfer an original game experience but still want to experience a randomized challenge, Retro Bravery, Scenario Generator and Hitman Roulette can generate interesting rulesets with randomized goals for many classic video games.

While this list is focused on third-party video game randomizers, there are also many official video game randomizers out there. Most notably, the unlockable item randomizer included in the Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil 2 is believed to be the very first item randomizer ever.

Like a King is a tower defense and deck-building game created by LAK Games. You are a king who must battle other kings using and combining the units in your collection of cards. Each card is a unique unit you can use on the battlefield. Some of them attack the enemy, but some of them mine gold and even lay out traps for the enemy unit. Complete quests, build a strong deck, and most importantly, strategize wisely to be the one true king that stands!

The ScummVM team does not recommend any individual supplier of games and this list is for reference purposes only. The ScummVM project does get a cut from every purchase on GOG.com through one of the links with the added affiliate referrer though.

This site tries to gather open-source or source-available remakes of great old games in one place. If you think that something is missing from the list - please go to our GitHub repository and create an issue or even a pull request!

A Remake is a game where the executable and sometimes the assets as well are remade open source. Some of these games aren't exact remakes but evolution of original ones, which were eventually open sourced. A Clone is a game which is very similar to or heavily inspired by a game or series. An Official project is the official source code release for a game that was formerly closed-source, maintained by the original creators and has minimal changes. A Similar game is one which has similar gameplay but is not a clone. A Tool is not a game, but something that assists in playing or modding the game, such as a high resolution patch, or resource extractor.

Linux gaming refers to playing video games on a Linux operating system. Because many games are not natively supported for the Linux kernel, various software has been made to run Windows games, such as Wine, Proton, and Lutris. The Linux gaming community has a presence on the internet with users who attempt to run games that are normally not supported on Linux. This includes a subreddit which has over 240k members as of January 2023.

Linux gaming started largely as an extension of the already present Unix gaming scene, with both systems sharing many similar titles. These games were either mostly original or clones of arcade games and text adventures. A notable example of this are the "BSD Games", a collection of interactive fiction and other text-mode titles.[1] The free software and open source methodologies which spawned the development of the operating system in general also spawned the creation of various early free games. Popular early titles included NetHack, Netrek, XBill, XEvil, xbattle, Xconq and XPilot. As the operating system itself grew and expanded, the amount of free and open-source games also increased in scale and complexity.[2]

The beginning of Linux as a gaming platform for commercial video games is widely credited to have begun in 1994 when Dave D. Taylor ported the game Doom to Linux, as well as many other systems, during his spare time.[3][4] From there he would also help found the development studio Crack dot Com, which released the video game Abuse, with the game's Linux port even being published by Linux vendor Red Hat.[5][6] id Software, the original developers of Doom, also continued to release their products for Linux. Their game Quake was ported to Linux in 1996, once again by Dave D. Taylor working in his free time.[7][8] Later id products continued to be ported by David Kirsch and Timothee Besset, a practice that continued until the studio's acquisition by ZeniMax Media in 2009.[9]

In 1991 DUX Software contracted Don Hopkins to port SimCity to Unix, which he later ported to Linux and eventually released as open source for the OLPC XO Laptop.[10] Other early commercial Linux games included Hopkins FBI, an adventure game released in 1998 by MP Entertainment,[11] and Inner Worlds in 1996, which was released for and developed on Linux.[12] In 1998, two programmers from Origin ported Ultima Online to Linux.[13] A website called The Linux Game Tome began to catalogue games created for or ported to Linux in 1995.[14]

On November 9, 1998, a new software firm called Loki Software was founded by Scott Draeker, a former lawyer who became interested in porting games to Linux after being introduced to the system through his work as a software licensing attorney.[17] Loki, although a commercial failure, is credited with the birth of the modern Linux game industry. Loki developed several free software tools, such as the Loki installer (also known as Loki Setup),[18] and supported the development of the Simple DirectMedia Layer, as well as starting the OpenAL audio library project.[19][20] These are still often credited as being the cornerstones of Linux game development.[21] They were also responsible for bringing nineteen high-profile games to the platform before its closure in 2002. 2ff7e9595c
